"K.R.I.T.’s parents raised him on soul music like Bobby Womack and Curtis Mayfield which stuck with him through his life. In fact, in a recent interview, K.R.I.T. told me: “I’d definitely like to work on some soul. I definitely wouldn’t mind working with the Dap Kings and Sharon Jones and some people like that.” But, as most kids do, he also craved the contemporary. He looked up to hip-hop icons of the time like the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac, and was particularly inspired by the latter’s poetry. He had always written poems himself and admired artists like Pac for their lyrical prowess but never saw any connection between his hobby and their careers. Soon, the newly-motivated K.R.I.T. began to take his poetry to the next level. By age 12, he was turning his rhymes into bars and crafting songs out of stanzas."
